Meanwhile across town—this man. He’s the Chief of Police and one hell of a bird fancier. Here he’s holding a Ringneck Pheasant but he was famous for his award-winning Carrier Pigeons. Raised in a small river town, he is an upstanding guy. As a young man he and his brother were crewmen on a
four-masted schooner running timber and rum between New Jersey and the West Indies. But then in 1894 he watched his brother drown off of Block Island and—enough was enough—he moved to a big city and joined the police force.
He’s married and has one grown son who is a bit of an ass—a humorless fellow. But the one notable thing the grown son produced is a kid of his own, a boy full of hell and adventure and humor. That little boy is five, and in one afternoon his world will collapse and he’ll come to live permanently with his grandfather, the Chief of Police.
And that five-year-old boy is Bossy’s grandfather.
