Bossy’s mother is a sweet and introspective baby. Because, naturally, you sort of had to be. Her parents—Walt and Bert—are young and in love and not particularly pliable to the notion of a baby orchestrating changes around the household. Neither Walt nor Bert had grown up in families surrounded by younger siblings or cousins or anything that required that type of personal negotiation.
Here Baby is visiting her relatives on Danenhower Street. They dropped by to see Bert’s best friend Mary, who lives next door to Aunt Jenny’s Italian
mother-in-law. Sitting on the Danenhower stoop is fun, watching the women beat the track back and forth between their airless kitchens and the corner grocery. But Baby’s favorite thing to do is ride in her carriage on the Atlantic City boardwalk. Dump da-dump da-dump go the wheels in the grooves of the wooden decking, swish swish swish goes the white fringe around the carriage’s navy blue hood.
