This bottle opener. Here’s the story: when Bossy was on her 14,000-mile, six-week (No) Book Tour this past spring, she met a member of Bossy’s council in San Diego who gave Bossy this homemade bottle opener. Turns out the thing was made by her father — a doctor and a character.
Here’s how it works:
Bossy adores that he thought to improve on the many available factory-issued bottle openers — and in fact his design not only makes for the perfect cap-flipping leverage, but the handle is quite ergonomic!
And also the thing looks like it could be the sweetest animated character:
Bossy was so very sad to learn this father of a Bossy reader, this doctor, this character and inventor of bottle-openers, passed away this summer. Bossy will always be honored to own one of his masterpieces, and will think of him and his family whenever someone cracks open a beer. And that’s a whole lot.

Thanks, Bossy, for the lovely tribute. Dad was a master bottle-opener-maker and oh-so-much-more.
*So* glad you got to meet my girl Jacquie. Doesn’t she rock?

September 20, 2010 at 12:31 pmSo sweet! Both your story and the bottle opener. It’s really the small things.
Ellie–Sorry for your loss, but happy for your obvious sweet memories.

September 20, 2010 at 12:39 pmAw, Dad. Aw, Ellie. (Hi Ellie!) Thanks for the tribute, Bossy. The best thing about the bottle opener, besides the obvious, is that once you open enough bottles with it, it gets a little smile from where it hits the curve of the top. Mine’s been known to sport Mr. Potato Head’s specs for a jaunty little ensemble. Glad you’re getting good use of the ‘Doc, they’ve become pretty special to those of us left behind.

September 21, 2010 at 4:26 pmI love its little cartoon face (especially well displayed in the thumbnail photo), and I love the fact that it develops a smile after a career of doing just what it’s supposed to.
(thanks for that factoid, Jacquie!)
Doug: perfect.
Build a Better Beer Bottle Opener and they will drink. As if they didn’t already.
