When Bossy was a kid, she loved watching The Wizard of Oz, except for Wizard who and Dorothy who because Bossy was all, “Where’s Toto?”
It was difficult for Bossy to concentrate on lions and tigers and bears oh my with little Toto running in and out of every scene at will.
While the world at large, across generations, enjoyed tin men and munchkins and flying monkeys — in technicolor — Bossy was consumed with worry over Toto and what he was doing offscreen. “Where’s Toto? Where’s Toto?” young Bossy repeatedly asked her parents until they lost all will to live and prayed for a sudden tornado to whip their high rise up and away.
One week from today, NCM Fathom, Warner Home Video, and Turner Classic Movies are celebrating The Wizard of Oz’s 70th anniversary with a high-definition release of the original film, which will be shown in only 440 movie theaters across the country.
In addition to the movie, the event will include stuff like archival interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. Bossy and her daughter are going and they can’t wait, where can’t wait equals they have to wait because the movie showing doesn’t take place until Wednesday Sept 23rd at 7 pm.
Here’s the deal: Bossy’s friends at NCM Fathom, Warner Home Video, and Turner Classic Movies want to give two tickets to one lucky Bossy reader. Just leave a comment below, one per person please, and Bossy will employ her friend the random number generator.
You may want to sneak a look at the list of participating theaters, first, to see if there is one convenient to you. Good luck!
I’ll get you, my Bossy, and your little dog, too.
I’m in luck! The one theater in my entire state that is showing it happens to be near by!
Oh yes! My all time fav movie! It’s playing at my theatre, and Grandma J would love those tickets….and will do her review.
That last photo of Bossy as Dorothy is a touch on the scary side
My 7 year old daughter would love to see this with me!
Awesome! But the severe-forehead hairline hairstyle? It’s really not “you”.
The yellow brick road does indeed stop in Ft. Wayne. Yea!
woo-hoo!!! Thanks for the info! I’m going to take my daughter, with or without free tix
We’re off to see the wizard!!
Bossy makes a rather crazed Dorthy, I too am now concerned with where Toto is.
Fun. Although the Wicked Witch of the West still scares VUBOQ.
bossy, what happened to your hair?
love love love this movie…the munchkins are my favorite cuz i am “a lollipop kid:”
This I’ll win, because I am DEATHLY AFRAID of The Wizard of Oz (flying monkeys – eeek). Margaret Hamilton came to my Kiddie Lit class and even at 100 years old and not wearing her witch hat, scared me.
The last photo is a tiny bit scary! I love The Wizard of Oz and my daughters love watching it with me.
I was always obsessed with the ruby slippers.
One of my favorite movies. Can’t wait until the 23rd.
TOTALLY creeped out by the Bossorothy photo.
I was in college before I ever knew Wizard of Oz was filmed in color! I’d been sufficiently scared by black and white flying monkeys on our black and white TV set as a kid. Was squirming at my college job really really wanting to see Wiz yet again, so my boss said “Go!” and I plopped down in the nearest (girl’s) dorm TV room. O.M.G. The witch’s face had been green all that time?!!!
This would be fun!
Ooooh … I am dressing up my daughter as Dorothy for Halloween, and now she can find out WHY.
YES! We have one theatre in the entire state showing it. I can’t wait.
I’ve never seen The Wizard of Oz. Don’t they kick you out of the country for that?
Please don’t count this as an entry. I’m just here to gripe that Gah! Once again we’re screwed out of the fun. One showing in all of North & South Dakota and Wyoming. And that one offering is a 5.5 hour drive from here. And yet? There’s another offering a couple hours south of that one in Omaha.
What gives party planners?
I miss the days when you could only watch it in a movie theater, or once a year when it was shown on television as a Special Event.
At my college the art department used to sponsor a Black and White Ball — and they showed “The Wizard of Oz,” timed exactly so that Dorothy (and Toto too, of course) stepped from black and white out into Technicolor Oz exactly at midnight. Loved it.
There’s no place like home…
I’d love to win tickets for my husband and 16 yoa daughter to go. One of my DH’s favorites. Daughter was Auntie Em, a Poppy and something else, and my son was Scarecrow a couple of years in a youth production.
Unfortunately, no showing in all of Manhattan, NYC, for son to attend!
Uh, yeah: that last photo is a bit creepy.
My daughter would adore this! She had a Wizard of Oz birthday in August and I made her a Dorothy costume that she needs to wear again! And it is playing in our town. Yay!
Whether at home, or in a store doing errnads, my 3 year old son insisted that I call him Dorothy, because of his favorite movie, The Wizard of Oz.
Pick me, pick me, because this is my dad’s FAVORITE movie and I’d love to give him the tickets.
I will do helium-hits all day long giving my best impressions of munchkins in celebration.
I always was fascinated by Dorothy’s hair. It grows longer and shrinks all throughout the movie. PS: That last picture confounded and confused me…then it sorta scared me.
Oh, I would love to take my daughter to this movie. Then, maybe she’ll start saying “You have no power here! Now begone, before somebody drops a house on you!”
Auntie Em! Auntie Em!
Oh I love the Wizard of Oz. . . the sparkly shoes, the eerie green of the Emerald City. . . the opiates. I too worried a lot about Toto but he seemed in the end to be a pretty self-reliant little doggie.
Me and MY munchkin would LOVE to go to see the Wizard!
Thanks Bossy
I quote this movie on a regular basis in my everyday life. It makes things more interesting.
Next time you meet someone new, ask, “Are you a good witch? Or a bad Witch?”
I have dying to show this movie to the kids!!!
I love the Wizard of Oz but those flying monkeys always scare me!
Oh, pick me!!!
My dad took me to see this in the theater when I was 8 or 9. It’s incredible! I just saw it again in the theater this spring. Amazingly it’s only playing at ONE theater in SF (the gays will not be pleased, just saying) but I can get to it if I’m the winner.
Also, that picture of your as Dorothy? Your best work yet.
I watched the Wizard of Oz so much as a little girl that I was able to memorize and recite the entire movie. Yes, it is a little on the crazy side but does provide a good party trick every now and then…
Hopefully my daughter will love it just as much (although almost as much would be sufficient).
I still have my daughters Dorothy dress and ruby slippers
#1
I adore The Wizard of Oz!
Oh, it would be fun to send my best buddy and my daughter! then I could watch her baby and get that baby jones out of the way!
YES! My all time favorite movie! And I am a Kansas girl!!
I love me some flying monkeys! I have one sitting atop my computer monitor as I type!
I will be there either way! Poppies….Poppies…
I have such fond memories of my sister & me, bathed & in our jammies, counting down the minutes ’til The Wizard of Oz came on. Love, love, love that movie.
Holy Moses Bossy! By the time my daughter was four she knew every single word of the Wizard of Oz. Really. Every.Word. She is nine now and would love to go.
PS. She was Dorothy three years running for Halloween complete with sparkly red shoes and her own red hair in braided pigtails. So cute that kid.
I also spent too much time worrying about Toto. How did Dorothy train him to stay near her and not run away?
We would love these tickets! My daughter, Em, was Dorothy on 3 consecutive Halloweens, in a lovely homemade costume, and she played a crow and a flying monkey in a middle school production of the play last year.
In 6th grade I was on the Speech & Drama team. Our production that year was The Wizard of Oz. My best friend got cast as the Wicked Witch of the West … I was thrown into the dreaded role as member #2 of the Lullaby League. You don’t even remember who that could be do you? Woe is the life of a sixth grader who is short & un-blossomed.
I’m not entering, but I had to say that the last pic cracked me up. Interesting that your parents’ reaction to the incessant “where’s Toto” was to lose the will to live, while mine would have been to turn the TV off and send me to my room.
Thought for sure MO would be left out! So glad we’re not.
Ohh I love this movie, but I couldn’t watch it much as a kid because my mom was scared of the flying monkeys. It would be awesome to get to see it on the big screen!
I love love love this.
I want to be off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of oz. Here is is the wiz the wiz, whatever a wiz he was…..
I suddenly have to pee.
Ooooh, I love this movie.
OMG BOSSY THOSE FREAKIN’ MONKEYS scared the crap out of me as a kid!!!!!! Luckily I’m grown now & know they are pretend & all!
I’d follow the yellow dirt road to Albuquerque to see this.
My wife loves this movie, it still freaks me out.
I watched it too as a kid. It was like a holiday….everyone would gather around and eat dinner together.
I remember watching this with my little sister for the first time. She suddenly jumped off the couch and shouted, “RUN, PUPPY, RUN!” She was also VERY into Toto.
Lions and tigers and bears…oh my!
(Those monkeys scared the pee out of me too!)
Win me, please!
How come the Lion never ate Toto? I also wondered where they went potty..does the Tin Man go potty? If so, does he rust?
I used to watch this religiously when they would show it once a year on TV when I was a child. I was TERRIFIED of those flying monkeys, and also could not stand Toto being in jeopardy, for the same reason I could neve watch Lassie. Who lets these animals be in peril all the time???
Love that movie
My daughter has been to see Wicked twice (including in NYC w/the awesome Stephaine Block) and has yet to see WOZ movie. So, thanks Bossy!
It is wrong to admit that I freaking hate that movie? Maybe it was living in Kansas. One too many, “Hey, where’s your dog, Toto?” growing up, I guess.
Is it wrong-er to admit that the Bossy as Dorothy picture may give me nightmares?
“First, they took my legs off and threw them over there. Then they took my chest out and threw it over there…”
“Well, that’s you all over.”
I embarrassed myself when it was re-released a few years ago during the scene when they find the Tin Man. And she’s says, “Why.. it’s a MAN!” I busted up because all I could think of was the hen, Prissy, from the Foghorn Leghorn cartoons.
“I’ll get you and you’re little dog too”
This movie still scares the pants off me and I’m a 38 y/o semi-mature woman who shouldn’t be scared of little munchkins (or oompa-loompas) and flying monkeys. I’m the sort of sarcastic gal who will ask someone having a bad day “if a house fell on their sister?”. Crack myself up everytime with that one.
I love the movie. I remember it used to be on only once a year and that was always a big event in our home. We had a B&W tv though so I didn’t realize it turned into color when she opened the door in Munchkinland until quite a few years of viewing, when we were over at family friends’ houses to watch it. I would love tix.
“And your little dog too!” I love this movie. I even have a Toto dog, her name is Abby!
My sister told me that they ran out of money and that is why part of the movie is in B&W – … and I believed her, I was also 5 y/o.
We’re not in Kansas anymore, but my Topeka-born daughter has a strong affinity with Dorothy. We’d love to win tickets to see the movie in Portland, OR.
My daughter is fanatical about The Wizard of Oz! We would love tickets. Thank you, Bossy!
Seeing this on a big screen would be amazing!
Dear Sweet Heavenly Bossy,
Please pick me!
I used to know a girl named the Cross-Eyed Flying Monkey … maybe I could take her if I win. Cause I’m nice like that.
Oooh, me! Not only do I own the deluxe dvd, I also have the written screenplay, a movie poster, books about Judy, AND dressed up as Dorothy for a few Halloweens… It is sad that I love the movie that much.
ACK! I cannot think of a more perfect evening to spend with my own mom the very night before the WEDDING WHIRLWIND begins.
I would LOVE to go!!
I love Oz! I even had Wizard of Oz checks back when I wrote checks.
FLYING Freaking Monkeys!!!! I want to go…
I had no idea this was going on, I’m so excited! And Toto too!
(btw, that is one u.g.l.y. dog. sorry)
You give me the ticket or I — I’ll bite you myself!
I’d love to be off to see the Wizard!
Count me in!
OMG. My favorite movie of ALL TIME!!! When I was in Kindergarten, I signed all my papers “Dorothy” even though that wasn’t my name.
Yes please!
I would love to take my daughter to see this!
Thanks for the opportunity Bossy!
Oh my, my daughter would flip out! Thanks oh so much!
OK, I admit it ~ the flying monkeys terrifed me as a child OK, I admit it ~ they still do
As does that pic of Bossy *shudder*
I always felt a little bit bad for the wicked witch of the west.
My pretty!
I love the Wizard of Oz! Then again, who doesn’t? After Ursula, the Wicked Witch of the West is my favorite villain.
Yay! I am so going to see this! :o)
We are actually attending a Wizard of Oz festival on Saturday in Chesterton, Indiana! My 4 year old is wearing her Dorothy costume and everything, so we would love to win!
I would love to take my daughter!
Other than the Flying Monkeys, which scared the crap out of me, I LOVED this movie and still do. I was so excited when I found out they were re-releasing it in High Def, although, I’m not sure I wanna see those monkeys in High Def.
My grandsons are going to be the lollipop kids for Halloween…we love the Wizard of Oz!!!
oh bossy and toto there is no place like home!
I want to see the wizard!
Gotta be my favorite movie of all time. Run, Toto, Run. That will be my epitaph. Is there a list I can get on to be one of your gays?
Oh, my daughter would LOVE this! There is a theater right by us that is showing it.
Bossy makes a damn good Dorothy!
Loved the movie, but hated the book “Wicked”, took me all of last summer to finish it!
Yay, it’s actually showing at at theater within driving distance.
Since I didn’t win the Yummie Tummy, I’ll need both tickets. One for my ass and one for my gut.
Lovely imagery there, wasn’t it.
Take pity on me, random number generator.
What an awesome giveaway! I’d love to go to this
Count me in – love, love, love the Wizard of Oz. Now if they’ll just bring Sound of Music back to the big screen in high def I could die happy.
Oh my, just what I’ve been waiting for! I love it when they bring older movies back in the theater again!
I am frightened by Bossy as Dorothy!
Ohhh…I would love 2 tickets to see this! And it’s playing at a theater near me.
If I don’t go I’ll be melting…
Bossy as Dorothy is fab…
dear random number generator,
i am willing to give us another try.
love,
your BFF (don’t you forget it)
Would love to win. Cute picture Bossy.
I would love to see this..
That would be fun. Toto’s my favorite too, although I’ve got a soft spot for the Lion.
Creepiest pic you ever posted, by far. But I like it.
I couldn’t take the risk of not getting tickets so I bought two. But sign me up for the contest! Because if I win, I’ve got pals I’ll surprise and take.
There’s no place like home! There’s no place like home!
Perfect! I’m seeing Wicked in Seattle WA on the 19th, now will plan to see the original with or without free tix!
Bossy, you totally rock my world!
My 4 year old is obsessed with this movie! Pick us please =o)
Yes! It’s showing 10 minutes from where I live! My 10-yr old would LOVE this!
Oh Pam wishes very much to win tickets. But Pam also wished very much not to run into Bossy as Dorothy because Pam thinks Pam would die.
toto is totally cute. Well read Hostess made my day:)
Oh please pick me RNG! My best friend lives in Kansas! (she’s the cool gal that told me about Bossy, too!)
I’ll take my little sister to the movies.
“Going so soon? I wouldn’t hear of it. Why my little party’s just beginning”. ….Love love this movie! And my down the road theater is showing it!
The witch’s hourglass was my favorite. I was fixated on it.
I’d love to see this on the big screen!
Oh – there’s a theater right by my house! Pick me!
Love this! This just happens to be showing at my favorite theater!
I would love to see this (there are 2 theaters in my area listed).
I would love to take my niece to this!! Shes 6 and LOVE TWOZ!
Flying Monkeys!!!!
Can’t believe they’re bringing a copy to Hawaii ~ and on my wedding anniversary. Woohoo!
I LOVE this movie.
I would love to go!!
This is one of my favorite movies of all time.
OMG… The Wizard of Oz is my favorite movie and I have been looking forward to this event.
I will probably also wear my dorothy costume that I made two years ago for Halloween and my sparkly red shoes. BONUS!
Surrender, Bossy!!
Hot diggity Toto the theater right up the road is playing it! Count me in.
I’d love to go!
It looks as though there is spaghetti on your forehead. But only in that picture. Normally it looks like hair.
I’m in luck! Three theatres in the Philly area.
If I won, I’d be giving the tickets to my coworker and her daughter, who can recite the movie beginning to end and around again.
Wow! The theater a couple miles away is running it! What fun!
And the soundtrack! The best! “March up to the door and bid it open. OPEN.”
Ah, a contest actually worth winning!
Don’t make me break out my flying monkeys! Love it !
My 10 yo has read all the Oz books but never seen the movie, so she would totally love this.
That pic is too funny!
A couple of weeks ago, I “won” EIGHT free movie passes because I did something over and above the call of patooty (my boring every day job). I, who never, EVER throws anything away until it’s 100 years old, must have accidentally thrown those precious tickets away because they are nowhere to be found. My kids are so disappointed. Eight free tickets. Gone. Poof.
So, with all my bad luck on those tickets, maybe I”ll have good luck with this batch.
I won’t hold my breath.
My youngest would love to go, she’s been Dorothy for Halloween every year since she first saw (parts of) the movie at age 3!
Pick me because I did NOT KNOW there was a color part of this movie until I went to college. It always came on on Sunday nights at 6PM and my mom would make me leave for church which started at 6:30.
Also, I want to make my daughter play hookie and go with me.
There’s one theater in all of Maine that’s showing the film, so yeah for that! The picture of Bossy-dorothy? Scarier than flying monkeys.
LOL at the “parents lost their will to live” line.
Loved this movie. The evil witch always scared me though.
me me me me me
Whoop! That would be totally fun. My nine-year-old has read all the Oz books, loved them… me too!
Oooh! My mother-in-law would love to see that movie. Just think of the brownie points I’d get for taking her!
PICK ME!
(Please??)
Pick me! I want to take my 3.5 year-old!
I think Sissy in TX #152 totally deserves them, but I would totally love winning tix.
OOOH – yay!!! It’s close!!! We’ll go hopefully no matter what – but out til after 10 on a school night? yipes!
How fun! thanks for the chance.
My daughter was so obsessed with all things Oz (movie as well as the original stories) when she was five that we watched the movie a gazillion times, including the director commentary. In fact, we used to have to read her the screenplay for nighttime stories, and I hated it until she highlighted the stage directions and told me I could just read the dialogue.
In other words, pick us! pick us!
I’ll wear my ruby slippers and buy the popcorn!
Love Dorothy and Toto too!
Yay! It’s playing at my local theatre!!!
Bossy + Dorothy = Emma Thompson
Me, me, me, the always unchosen. Besides, I have always found this movie scarilicious.
Wouldn’t it be cool to have a Great Dane named Toto??
Hmmm…
(we are getting close to puppy finding time) – we may need to consult on breeders later this year….
Thanks!
Bonnie in Houston
Oh! Oh! OOOOH! Pick me! I want to stay up late on a school night, eat popcorn, and marvel in RED poppies and the GREEN of the Emerald City. And the monkeys?! Gah! They are STILL scarier than most of the crap shown on t.v.
Oooh, I want to go.
My 16 year old sister has yet to see this movie all the way through. I’m thinking of taking her so she can say the first time she saw it was in the theater.
Oh yippeee! It’s playing in Portland! Oh what an event it was each year when I was a kid and it would come on TV. I’d love to see it again on the big screen!
Would LOVE to see this with one of my teens!
I always wanted to be Dorothy for Halloween as a child, but my hair was blonde and I didn’t think it was authentic so I never went as her.
OOO ooo – pick me! pick me!
Am I too late?
Playing 20 minutes from my house! Thanks for the info..and PICK ME oh random number generator thingy
Even with the flying monkeys, I still want to go!!
I am the RANDOM blogger that the generator needs to pick! I have watched this movie every year I can remember!! In SO CAL, they would always run it on Thanksgiving…ah the memories!
Toto? Very cute, but I was always fixated on those beautiful ruby slippers. Bright. Shiny. Object. Mmmmm.
oh my favorite movie of all time. I scrolled all the way through that list to find Springfield OR near where we are now. Can the last entry win?
I would love to see this in the theatre.
“bossy as dorothy” – one scary mama-jama!
I saw the ruby slippers at the smithsonian – NOT rubies, but sequins sewn on a pair of ordinary low-heeled satin pumps. destroyed my fantasy…
holy crap on a cracker! there’s a showing by me. even if i don’t win, i’ve already marked my calendar to go.
Yes, please!
My four year old LOVES this movie. Personally, I thought that the movie would scare the bejeezus out of her. But no. And that scares me just a little.
Would love to take my daughter!
That Photoshop is a little scary looking!
Bossy looks better with blonde hair.
I’m always on the look-out for interesting mother/daughter events.
What does it say about me that my favorite character is the Tin Man? #1 movie of all time.
Ooooo. My 12 y.o. daughter loved this movie when she was a toddler. Her middle name is Dorothy and she always thought it was because of The Wizard of Oz. We’ll be seeing this regardless!
My 10 year old has never seen the movie and was talking about it this summer. Perfect timing….Thanks for the heads up!
I’m going whether I win or not!
I remember when network TV ran it every year. It was always a big deal in our house to watch it as a family. I still watch it any change I get.
We watched it as kids any time it was on – it was a HUGE deal whenever it came on tv. (this was pre-cable) I would love to see it in a theatre.
Watching Wizard of Oz was an annual event at our house growing up! My kids have never seen it.
If I win I am heading in your direction and watching it with you! Come on 198!!
Bossy as Dorothy gave me pause but I would love to see this movie.
