This tenacious pumpkin patch.
For years Bossy’s husband has managed a compost pile in the back of the yard, made up of decomposing leaves and grass clippings and kitchen waste. And occasionally something that gets discarded on this pile will seed itself and begin to grow, just like the Mystery Plant this past spring.
“I think it’s one of those prolific tomato plants you loved last year,” Bossy’s husband said in order to ensnare Bossy into the concept of planting it in the proper garden.
“Nah, it looks like one of those zucchini plants that produce that fruit no one actually wants to eat,” Bossy said. And so her husband turned away from the garden proper and dug a hole for this mystery plant across the yard in a very random spot near an old tree stump.
The end. Then lo and behold the plant grew and grew and grew and grew and one day the plant produced a fruit the shape of a pumpkin. And then it grew some more.
There are other pumpkins growing besides the one pictured, and the pumpkin patch itself is slowly taking over the expanse of the backyard.
