Once upon a time there was a television series called Lost. The producers named it Lost because you will forfeit years of your life watching this show on Netflix.
Bossy planned to watch Lost with her friend Martha when it first aired on ABC back in 2004. But then Bossy’s friend Martha’s son had a cold on the night it premiered and the next thing Bossy knew six seasons and 121 viewing hours were gone forever.
Up until a few weeks ago, here is everything Bossy knew about Lost.
- It was weird
- It got weirder
- Then it got really weird
Other things Bossy knew about Lost before watching the show: every actor in the world appeared in at least one episode.
Or at least that’s how it feels every time Bossy is watching random stuff on TV and someone in Bossy’s life shouts, “She was on Lost!”
Other variations on this theme include, but are not limited to, “He was on Lost!”
The premise of Lost is as follows: an airplane crashes into a desert island and the survivors have to figure out who is cuter, Jack or Sawyer:
Before Bossy discovered this time suck wrapped in a black hole, Bossy had many interests. And sometimes when Bossy is watching back to back episodes of Lost on her overheating laptop Bossy thinks about how she should be learning Latin, or reading McCullough’s 1776, or applying highlights to her nose hair.
But instead, Bossy stays Lost.

July 23, 2012 at 3:48 pmYes, it is very easy to get lost in Lost although the series finale still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. As for the actors, I feel the same way about 20 seasons of Law & Order. Everyone was on that show at some point!

July 23, 2012 at 3:53 pmI tried. I really tried to get into LOST. Turns out I can only have my emotional rug pulled out from under me so many times before I decide to go with hardwood floors. And LOST was exceptionally good at rug-pulling. Every episode seemed to end with a mindƒµ¢k. After awhile the intrusively eerie music just made me laugh. I’d imitate it while performing some mundane task like making a sandwich, in hopes it would make the experience sexier. Never worked.
But yes, I owe a great debt to LOST: it’s provided me with a fine metaphor for those times when I feel trapped in an impossibly tangled mess. Which is more often than one might expect.

July 23, 2012 at 4:00 pmI enjoyed listening to co-workers puzzle and agonize over Lost. Not sure that they appreciated my deeming it Gilligan’s Island for the 21st Century.
Watched a few episodes but did not dive in.
Law and Order was a treasure trove of actors.

July 23, 2012 at 4:13 pmVery good LOST recap, but the answer is obviously Sawyer. Jack is a whiny whiny man.
Also, I think the series could have easily ended at the end of season 5 and not even gone to season 6. Because that’s when things got WEIRD.

July 23, 2012 at 4:26 pmOh man–I did the same thing a couple of years ago: I watched 4 seasons in a VERY short time period (was unemployed/freelancing) and caught up to watch Season 5 and 6 live as they aired with other LOST-watching people.
The only thing I wish you could do right now is find out someone else who is doing the same thing you are so you can talk about it with them. Because that’s half the fun of LOST–all the surrounding conversation/analysis/speculation/rabbit hole theorizing stuff.
Have fun! It’s maddening but there’s nothing like it.

July 23, 2012 at 5:14 pmSawyer all the way, bay-bee!
LOST on Netflix is also very helpful when one is recovering from surgery, as a break from GRAY’S ANATOMY.

It’s pretty much the best show ever.

July 23, 2012 at 6:57 pmSave yourself, Bossy. It ain’t worth the trip. What I wouldn’t give to have all that viewing time back. So I could, ya know, read more blogs and stuff.

July 24, 2012 at 1:06 amAnd I loved LOST. Love. To the point that I actually have a Lost t-shirt. (I think this proves my love.) And I loved the finale. I want to rewatch it. The whole series. Again. And I will someday. When I have Netflix again.
Enjoy the trip.

July 24, 2012 at 5:31 amI thought Lost was great. I watched it all the time and my husband hated. I got all the episodes recently and made him watch them. Of course, he was hooked. How could he not be! Watching the series a second time was fascinating.

July 24, 2012 at 12:15 pmI miss LOST so much. I still think about it all the time. One day I WILL rewatch it! The finale was strange, but still worth it to watch the entire series!!!

July 24, 2012 at 12:55 pmI used to watch Lost every week religiously…back when I had cable and did such things. Just thank the gods you don’t have to suffer through commercials. THAT was tragic.

July 24, 2012 at 2:45 pmI have all 6 seasons of Lost on DVD. And I have cycled thru the whole set at least once, not counting when it was actually on real TV. I’m pretty sure I like it.
And I know I like Sawyer best.

July 24, 2012 at 6:12 pmI’ve never fallen into the Lost wormhole, but have done the same thing with far too many other series (I’m in France so it’s not easy to get shows in English, that’s why I’m so hopelessly behind). I overdosed on Mad Men (mmmm Jon Hamm…), Grey’s Anatomy (yup, all 8 seasons in about 2 months), Breaking Bad, and now True Blood (mmmm Alexander Skarsgard…), where I’m up to season 4… I clearly have control problems – I cannot watch “one episode”, it has to be multiples, back-to-back.

July 25, 2012 at 11:33 amBossy, you are friggin’ hilarious…I literally LOL’d when I read this post. I was an avid (DVD series when it came out as a package deal) Lost watcher, and spent many a day/night/day/night (pretty much whole weeks went by when I didn’t leave my apartment) lost in Lost. It was awesome and OH SO disappointing. I hope you are ready for the ending because it will most likely piss you off or make you wish the series wasn’t over (mixed bag of emotions). Thank you for this post…I feel I have a true sister in Lost.

July 25, 2012 at 11:44 amI started with Lost, but discovered that if you missed an episode or two, you were lost. I pretty much got the first year, but after that life interferred. Since I have 7 season of 24 Hours that I have yet to watch I will not be visiting Lost for some time long into the future.

July 25, 2012 at 6:10 pmOh, yes. We were lost in LOST, and I was so very, very grateful we did that when all the episodes were available on Netflix – I think I would have been a basket case waiting a week (or several months!) between episodes. It’s one of the few shows both of my sons (6 years apart, vastly different personalities and likes) and I enjoyed watching together.
Sawyer AND Jack, pleaseandthankyou. And throw in Desmond while you’re at it, brotha.

July 27, 2012 at 11:06 amI noticed how much Evan Handler looks like Andrew Zimmer who also goes to desert islands looking for and eating strange food like stinky fruit and weird animals.

August 4, 2012 at 10:22 pmOh boy! The only thing worth than losing years of your life watching LOST is when you finally get to the finale and say “What the hell?!? I can’t believe I wasted all that time for this!” I loved LOST so much (except for the dreadful ending) it’s still a sore topic for me.

August 19, 2012 at 5:57 pmThis explains so much. Bossy has been lost in Lost.
I am glad Bossy has a job and outside interests, and is moving on from the UnDivorce. It’s all very healthy.
But, please, post more than one post a month. I miss the musings and the hilarious insights. Or does one have to be in a state of stuckness and use a blog to become un-stuck, at which point the blog loses its usefullness?
