Comb the continent and you won’t find anyone more full of life than Bossy’s grandfather Walt. In his late teens he meets a trumpet player named Red and joins his outfit—a full Dixie combo consisting of trumpet, clarinet, piano, guitar, bass, and drums—and they play three to five nights a week for bootleggers in a tatty gin joint. By day Walt works in a tannery and for fun he kicks around with his buddies Fran and Harry. They arrange to meet daily on the dilapidated front steps of an abandoned building, which they refer to as their office.
But Fran and Harry are also next-door neighbors, and one day Walt goes over to their alley to hang out and play some football on the adjacent sandlot. He doesn’t know he’s about to fall in love at first sight.
