Bossy’s neighborhood holds a fundraiser every winter, which requires the purchase of these luminary bags and candles that line every street on New Year’s Day.
Such a pretty sight! Those sand filled paper bags with a lit candle inside – what a lot of people call luminarias – are actually farolitos, a strong holiday tradition in my home state of New Mexico. Luminarias are a bunch of little bonfires, another Christmas tradition. Both are related to lighting the way for Las Posadas, which is a reenactment of Mary and Joseph seeking shelter in Bethlehem. Though you might enjoy knowing a little about them.
Growing up, our entire neighborhood did the illuminaries for the week leading up to, and including Christmas.
Glad to see you’re still doing it.
They’re way cool.
Love this idea… of course, to emulate it in my neighbourhood, I would need to buy about 20 000 candles and “luminary bags” (not old actresses?) to get ‘our stretch of street’ lit up… I might just admire yours I think!!

January 4, 2009 at 4:59 pmOur village does these in gallon jugs. Maybe paper bags would help out the recycling effort a little next year.

January 4, 2009 at 6:16 pmThis is so pretty, and much nicer than the drunken people than generally line Britain’s streets on New Year’s Eve. Lovely!

January 4, 2009 at 6:53 pmI agree, Raz. A bunch of drunken people had a yelling match at the end of my driveway on New Year’s Eve. I was too jet lagged to join them.

January 5, 2009 at 5:27 amSo very pretty. Luminary bags make me twitch though because my freakish brain can’t step away from bag + flame.
