Welcome to Bossy’s Ear Worm, which will feature songs currently in Bossy’s headphones. Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.
Beck, Tropicalia.
This song is off of Beck’s Mutations record. Broken guitars, hideous shards, decay, haze, eviction, poverty, and misery. This song would be a big bummer if it wasn’t so darn light-footed.
You know how Domino magazine does that feature each month, “Can This Outfit Be Turned Into A Room?”. Well, Beck is a genius at turning East L.A. into songs. I’ve been listening to “Guero” (translation: “whitey”) lately and it evokes all the sights, sounds and smells (car exhaust mixed with street tacos)of that part of the city. Who knew I’d miss this like a lost limb?
mutations is such a damn good album, many point to odelay or his more popular albums, but for me this is the Beck album
Beck is a cutey.
Agreed…Beck is adorable and I love “Black Tamborine,” too…
Beck is wonderful and he comes from a very artistic family -his grandfather was a famous artist of some sort (don’t remember his name though)
Beck is teh awesome! Alwyn, “Guero” is one of my favorite CDs of his.
