Oh good, it’s Valentine’s Day again, because you know how much the Undivorced enjoy celebrating the holidays of romance.
Except the truth is Bossy never saw the appeal. While it’s true Valentine’s Day affords a chocolate-eating opportunity, it’s also the day we celebrate Cupid’s arrow through the heart and — is it Bossy — that’s just ow.
Bossy never understood why Valentine’s Day gained in popularity given all of the other widely-known events worthy of celebration that took place on February 14th. Shall we?
- Happy Apple Parer Patent Day!
- Happy Oregon admitted as the 33rd State Day!
- Happy Emperor Leopold Chases Jews out of Vienna Day!
- Happy U.S. Congress Begins Using Voting Machines Day!
- Happy Victor Fleming replaces George Cukor as Director of Gone With the Wind Day!
- Happy Sugar Ray Robinson defeats Jake Lamotta Day!
- Happy Anniversary of Jackie Kenenedy‘s Televised White House Tour Day!
- Happy Aretha Franklin Records Respect Day!
- Happy First Micro On A Chip Patented By Texas Instruments Day!
- Happy Jerry Garcia Weds Deborah Koons Day!
and finally

February 12, 2011 at 5:21 pmFeb 14th is my son’s birthday, and the day I proposed to my hubby. Valentine’s Day lost all attention 11 years ago when my first son was born.

February 12, 2011 at 5:50 pmWait. Does this mean you don’t have a birthday shrine for Florence Henderson?

February 12, 2011 at 5:57 pmIt’s also statehood day for Arizona…Feb. 14th, 1912. AND, it’s also Rob Thomas’s (Matchbox 20) birthday. He is my next husband, in case anyone was wondering.

February 12, 2011 at 6:25 pmthanks for the ideas, Bossy! But I must admit, being undivorced is way better than being still living together on Valentine’s Day. Now I don’t have to get him a card or anything b/c we’re separated….that would be stupid. But when we were still together but I was wishing we were separated, I had to go and find him a card that I could give him with a straight face. I mean, the pressure is off now!!

February 12, 2011 at 7:42 pmI’m happily married and we still dont do nothing for Valentines day, I think the whole holiday is rather dumb. Even when I was younger I cringed when people told me what they were buying and worse, what they expected..ACK! Honestly I had the most fun making Valentine boxes for my kids to take to school way back in the day. They’re giant adults now, and like me dont expect anything. I use to tell them, “go buy yourself something” You’ll feel better about youself! OK I sound kinda cynical , but really I’m not at all!

February 12, 2011 at 8:01 pmFeb 14th is also National Ferris Wheel Day. You can go around and around in circles. Kind of like a lot of marriages.

February 12, 2011 at 9:43 pmKudos on the research, Bossy. Still, that doesn’t look like Sugar Ray to me.

February 12, 2011 at 11:19 pmActually, my parents (of blessed memory) met on Valentine’s Day at a college basketball game – – over 70 years ago! Ack!. So I wouldn’t be here if not for that happening. Like if that year had skipped the 14th or something.
I’m all for considering the day an excuse to eat excellent chocolate.
I hope the day is as painless as possible for you, dear Bossy!

February 12, 2011 at 11:39 pmI do like cards. My mother was a famous card sender. I always sent her one too. Now I send my undivorcing daughter one. Me, just living in sin. Makes card shopping different.

(I think chocolates would be cheaper.)

February 13, 2011 at 8:12 pmI suggest waiting until the day after Valentine’s Day and go to Walgreens and buy all the chocolate you want at half price.

February 14, 2011 at 12:42 pmBossy, this is fab. I think we undivorceds and post-divorcees and even many of Los marrieds folks should thank you for this enriching experience. Especially because apparently Valentine’s Day is apparently turning into a big day to file for divorce, too. Perfect!

February 14, 2011 at 9:07 pmMy best Valentines Day ever was hosting a single malt tasting party 13 years ago (for singles, with plenty of scotch and food…). However, that’s where I met my husband, who is now–despite my best attempts to make it clear–unaware that he is also undivorced. I use this day to celebrate my truly special gifts, a 12 year old son and his 8 year old sister. Awesome kids, despite their upbringing!
