Yesterday Bossy hung out with her dad, who broke his humerus a few weeks ago — and gah did you know they don’t cast for those breaks anymore? Just immobilization — but that doesn’t stop Bossy’s dad from futzing with a stack of Swiss cheese.
A couple of years ago my mother (with severe dementia) fell out of bed and broke her wrist. I took her to the orthopedist, he told me he could put a cast on it or not, my choice, the cast would not promote healing, it would just keep her wrist immobile. As the cast could become a really good weapon, I decided on no cast.
I broke my humerus about twenty years ago, and even then they didn’t cast it. After about 3 weeks of no healing they finally did have to cast it. It was one huge cast!
My daughter was hit by a car last summer and broke her shoulder, upper arm, elbow, hip, upper leg, lower leg, cracked her back and neck and guess what? No cast either. They did a lot of interior and exterior pinning. Doc said bones don’t like to be immobile and don’t heal well that way. It worked cause she’s up and walking and avoiding cars now.
My niece-in-law recently broke her humerus, climbing a waterfall on an adventure vacation. Pretty adventurous! She could hardly type til her doc said that if she’d secure her upper arm, she could move her lower arm at will. So now she’s back blogging and FB-ing again.
I was wondering how your Dad was doing. Glad to hear everything is good. I am from the Chicago area and have never heard the word futzing. Can you explain?

May 22, 2009 at 6:14 amI think I would need a cast. I would have trouble not over doing it as usual. I hope your Dad is healing quickly.

May 22, 2009 at 11:39 amNow I’m jealous of bossy again. Because she sees her brother and her dad regularly and mine are 1500 miles away! Boo hoo.
Besides. Now I want cheese. I had sworn off cheese.

May 22, 2009 at 11:55 pm4 out of 5 doctors agree that futzing with cheese does not require mobilization of the humerus.
A guy’s gotta eat!
