Scary, crazy, sad, vindictive, defensive, egotistical, delusional, high, unapologetic, maniacal, smart, stupid, arrogant, offensive, and manic are just a few of the words that come to mind regarding Charlie Sheen‘s recent media attention, which comes on the heels of his sitcom’s cancellation, which comes on the heels of his bad behavior.
My two goddesses, defeat’s not an option, epic behavior, we’re winning, and I’m a rock star are more words, but these are courtesy of Charlie Sheen himself, during last night’s interview on 20/20.
Oh, wise esteemed council, do you have anything to add?

I feel sorry for him. He’s having a very, very public meltdown.

March 2, 2011 at 9:26 amSad to see someone prove, yet again, that money can’t buy happiness. Wonder if he ever thought to be thankful for anything? Time he got serious about getting help, retiring, and getting over himself.

March 2, 2011 at 10:19 amI agree that it’s time for the media to quit provoking the rants and raves. It’s a trainwreck and everybody wants to watch.
We’ve seen it before with Lindsey Lohan and Brittney Spears. When you have your breakdowns in public you are crucified, when you have them in private you are admired. Somebody needs to get a court ordered hospitalization before we get up one morning and read that he is dead.
Shanna says
March 2, 2011 at 10:20 amAs sad as he is he shares many similarities regarding the delusions with a certain Wisconsin politician. I am finding that kind of funny even though I will be getting a $6000 a year pay cut thanks to our Gov. At least Charlie isn’t impacting my paycheck.
Shelia says
March 2, 2011 at 10:29 amPersonally, I’d like to see a little less blaming of the media for his behavior. The media is not provoking his rants and raves. The media is reporting on it. And they do so because people (with a few exceptions) want to see it. The interviews are happening because each interviewer wants to be the one to catch the soundbyte that everyone will be quoting. (Case in point: Bossy’s reference to “last night’s interview on 20/20.”) Not point in condemning the media, which is only doing its job. When I get sick of hearing about something, I turn the channel or mute it.

March 2, 2011 at 11:36 amNarcissistic Personality Disorder, in spades. Can it be treated? Yes. Is it treated? Rarely. Because people with NPD don’t have a problem. It’s everyone else who has the problem. You know how they say the first step is admitting you have a problem? Well, he doesn’t have a problem (in his whacked out mind), therefore there can be no recovery. I think his next bender just might kill him. Because if he thinks this white-knuckle sobriety thing is going to last very long, he’s deluding himself.
Jami says
March 2, 2011 at 11:44 amDo we really need more “All Charlie, All The Time” reportage? Sadly, he’ll continue his public meltdown because the viewing public wants to see it. Why? My opinion is that allows people to look at him and say, “Things may be shitty for me right now, but at least I’m not THAT messed up.”
Robin says
March 2, 2011 at 11:45 amI LOVE BADLANDS, too. One of my faves.
I have been watching a lot of the coverage because I took a nasty fall and it’s just right there! Everywhere. He is in a psychiatric state of emergency. His appearance on Today this morning showed his Tiger Blood fading a bit. I wish he would go check himself in. Fat chance.
I do wish I had a mercury surfboard, though.

His poor family…to see this.

March 2, 2011 at 1:56 pmI am becoming increasingly frustrated, not with the media coverage (which I”m mostly avoiding/ignoring) but with the public’s reactions. It makes me so sad to hear the glib reactions. Charlie Sheen may be the biggest douche in the world, but he’s also clearly suffering from bi-polar disorder. This whole situation could be an excuse to talk seriously about mental health awareness and care in this country, but instead, people prefer to snark. I feel like asking people, What if it were your son/brother/husband?
Jen says
March 2, 2011 at 2:43 pmI, too, feel we’re all witnessing this man have a complete mental breakdown. I can’t bring myself to watch the interviews either, although I’ve been told snippets by friends. I remember when Britney was having her breakdown and many people thought it was hilarious, and all I could do was feel bad for her and hope that someone would step in and save her before she went too far and lost her life. Thank goodness someone did. I don’t know whether it’s too late for Charlie or not, but I sincerely hope not. I don’t want to watch anyone fall apart like that. They’re human beings, after all.

March 2, 2011 at 3:26 pmIt brings to mind the “Octomom” thing. We’re all so fascinated by all the crazy that it turns into a media feeding frenzy and there’s no way the person can get out from under it. Sad. Dude is sick.

March 2, 2011 at 4:42 pmSo sad that this is another example who surrounds himself with “Yes” men who think anything he says or does is influential perfect and brillant. He needs to be put under a conservatorship aka Brittany. His Dad Martin (Who was quite the wild boy back in the day) needs to be in charge. 5 kids? WHY do women keep having kids with bad boys? WHY? WHY? What are we teaching our kids?

March 2, 2011 at 7:27 pmOh man, Charlie used to be my pretend boyfriend…we broke up in the 90’s.
I’m still sad because my ex is clearly in need of medical attention. I too laughed at the things he said. I feel guilty about it though. He’s insane. He needs meds. I wouldn’t laugh at a cancer tumor and Charlie has as much control over his brain as someone with cancer does over their body.

March 3, 2011 at 7:47 pmI think just because he is a “celebrity” the media could have evaluated this situation and deduced that clearly he is unwell, dangerous and in need of serious help, not overexposure in a very public forum. Schizophrenic and bipolar breaks are never seen by the person having them so…who is going to be the grown up here? I don’t think when he was “well” he would have been my favorite person but the humane thing to do is not to exploit his demise as “entertainment”.
Judy says
March 4, 2011 at 11:00 amIn Michigan, your family can file for commitment if you are a danger to yourself or others. Not sure why this hasn’t been done unless their state law prevents it.
On a positive note, he resurrected the word “skuldugerry” so we have something to be thankful for during this blatant irresponsible chronicle of the demise of a mentally ill person.

March 13, 2011 at 3:25 pmI enjoyed Jon Cryer’s rebuttal after the attack, calling him a troll. Yes, Charlie Sheen is mentally ill, and it’s sad and scary to watch. I think if he actually came off drugs and is stone cold sober, he did it too fast, and his brain is so chemically screwed up (on top of the mental illness), that he is treading in dangerous waters, and the people who actually care about him (not fame hungry “goddesses”, slick agents, or other posse) like his family are completely helpless to watch him spiral down the drain. This week, Mike Starr was found dead (likely of OD), and he was as screwed up on drugs as Charlie (although different drugs), and everyone calls their self medicating “a disease”. Addiction is really sad, and although it requires the same treatment as a disease for overcoming it, it’s self inflicted, so not a disease. It’s like comparing cancer to crack, and saying they’re the same. Anyway, I hope they find some way to help him. Seems like the more money some people earn, the more out of touch with reality they become. And some people handle it well.
and Asshat!!!! I’m loving that one, assimilating it into my vocabulary!!!!
